When Is the Release Date of Puss in Boots: The Last Wish?

A sequel to Puss in Boots was announced for release in 2018. Four years later, we finally have a firm release date: September 23, 2022, for Puss in Boots: The Last Wish. The movie was later pushed back to 20 January 2023, just in time for Christmas. Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, like many other movies released in 2022, will only be available in theatres. This follows years of many films being streamed directly.

There has been no word from the film's distributor, Universal Pictures, on whether it will be released on DVD, BluRay, or Digital, or when it will be available to stream on Peacock. At this time, if you want to see Puss in his second solo film, make sure to get a seat at your local theatre when the film opens.

What Cast members Will Reappear in Puss in Boots: The Last Wish?

In the upcoming sequel, Antonio Banderas will reprise his role as Puss in Boots, the gazpacho-loving gato. The Spanish actor has appeared in a number of films and television shows since the last Puss in Boots film, most recently portraying the ruthless Santiago Moncada in the film adaptation of the video game Uncharted. Interestingly, in addition to the original English cuts, the multilingual actor has voiced Puss in Spanish and Italian dubs of the films.

Salma Hayek will return as Kitty Softpaws, Puss's love interest, and counterpart. She is a streetwise female feline and master manipulator who is skilled with a sword and even more so with words. Hayek is a talented actress best known for playing Frida Kahlo in the 2002 film Frida. She most recently played Pina Auriemma, Patrizia Reggiani's ex-best friend, in the 2021 film The House of Gucci.

What Is the Plot of Puss in Boots: The Last Wish?

The following is Universal Pictures' official description:

Everyone's favorite Leche-loving, swashbuckling, fear-defying feline returns this holiday season. DreamWorks Animation presents a new adventure in the Shrek universe for the first time in more than a decade, as daring outlaw Puss in Boots discovers that his passion for peril and disregard for safety have taken their toll. Puss has consumed eight of his nine lives, though he has lost count along the way. Getting those lives back will launch Puss in Boots on his most ambitious quest yet.

Antonio Banderas reprises his role as the infamous PiB, embarking on an epic journey into the Black Forest to find the mythical Wishing Star and reclaim his lost life. With only one life remaining, Puss must humble himself and seek assistance from his former partner and nemesis, the captivating Kitty Softpaws (Oscar® nominee Salma Hayek Pinault). Puss and Kitty will be aided in their quest—against their better judgment—by Perrito, a ratty, chatty, relentlessly cheerful mutt (Harvey Guillén, What We Do in the Shadows).

Our trio of heroes will have to work together to stay one step ahead of Goldi (Oscar® nominee Florence Pugh, Black Widow), the Three Bears Crime Family, Jack Horner (Emmy winner John Mulaney, Big Mouth), and the big, bad Wolf (Wagner Moura, Narcos).

The character Puss in Boots is based on an Italian fairytale character from the 1500s, Gatto Con Gli Stivali, who is depicted as an anthropomorphic cat who helps his master win the hand of a princess in marriage while also gaining money and power as a great lord. The DreamWorks version of this character's story is quite different, with his creators drawing inspiration from cat videos on YouTube as well as some of cinema's greatest adventurers, Indiana Jones and Zorro, the latter of whom Banderas portrayed in the 1998 film.

Puss's creators wanted him to have a wild backstory in which he had been everywhere and done everything when he was first imagined for the Shrek franchise. After stealing the show and audiences' hearts in Shrek 2, filmmaker Chris Miller wanted to delve into Puss' life before his time in Far Far Away. These spinoff films provide audiences with a glimpse into the lovable and occasionally milk-drunk hero's long and storied past.

Puss has lived a full life since his first solo film, in which he faced off against his best friend Humpty Dumpty (Zach Galifianakis) in a battle over magic beans and a golden goose. He will face a new foe in the sequel: his own mortality.

Puss is in his final life after having his bell run, both literally and metaphorically, and is reminded by Kitty Softpaws to make it special. Puss pulls himself up by his bootstraps and embarks on another adventure after hearing the fable of the Last Wish. Puss lives each day as if it were his last, fighting his way through folktale foes and looking for his last chance at another chance. On his journeys, Puss will come face to face with another fairytale foe, a crime family led by Goldilocks and her three bear cronies. Audiences will have to wait to find out what troubled history has brought these two characters together.

Will There Be a Puss In Boots 3?

If Puss is successful in finding the Last Wish and restoring his nine lives, the door is open for even more adventures for the macho gato in San Ricardo and beyond. This follows DreamWorks' announcement of a fifth Shrek film in 2016. The anticipated release date for this fifth film has been pushed back from 2018 to 2022, with no word from DreamWorks on whether this will happen. With Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz, and Eddie Murphy all being active again after their respective hiatuses, it appears likely that they'll be back to voice Shrek, Fiona, and Donkey.
